Shoreview still looking to fill vacant committee and commission spots

Many volunteers sit on city committees and commissions which do research and make recommendations to the Council to help them make more informed decisions.

Three committees and commissions still have a total of five vacancies to fill. The deadline for application has been extended to the end of January, 2010. To apply call the city at 651.490.4600.

Open positions include:

  • Bikeways and Trails Committee – 1 open spot
    • To advise the City Council in matters concerning the development of bikeways, trailways and alternative means of transportation and to promote the implementation thereof.
    • Meets 1st Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
  • Environmental Quality Committee – 2 open spots
    • The Environmental Quality Committee provides recommendations to the City Council on issues relating to the environment, water quality and solid waste. The Committee’s duties include reviewing development proposals for environmental concerns; storm water quality; and forestry, providing input into the local watershed planning process; studying solid waste disposal and recycling; and providing educational programs and information to the public on environmental issues.
    • Meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month.
  • Human Rights Commission – 2 open spots
    • The Shoreview Human Rights Commission advises and aids the city of Shoreview by establishing and promoting a community standard of equal opportunity and freedom from discrimination. We envision a community where all people are welcomed, valued, and respected; where each person feels at home. The Shoreview Human Rights Commission was re-established by the Shoreview City Council in August of 1992 to act in cooperation with the State Human Rights Department in securing for all citizens equal opportunity in housing, employment, public accommodations, public services, and education.
    • The Shoreview Human Rights Commission is charged with the following duties:
      • to develop educational programs and increase awareness
      • to coordinate efforts with the Human Rights Commissions of neighboring cities where appropriate
      • to advise and make recommendations to the City Council in regard to human relations and civil rights problems in general
      • to give direction and encouragement to the work of all individuals and agencies addressing themselves to planning, policy making, and educational programming in the area of civil and human rights, including helping people identify their responsibilities to bridge cultural and other differences.
    • Meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
