Letter to the editor by Jack Munich

I was pleased to learn that State Representative Paul Gardner began this year’s legislative session by formally apologizing for disparaging comments he made about colleagues last year. However, the content of his apology was hollow by any measure. For those who missed it, here is the entirety of his penance:

“In May of last year I made some unkind, disrespectful remarks about two of my colleagues on the social networking tool Twitter,” Gardner said. “And I would like to apologize to them today, and thank you for your attention.”

This is hardly what the bi-partisan House Ethics Committee was looking for when they ordered Gardner to apologize last summer. If we cannot trust our representative to behave in a responsible manner and take proper responsibility for his actions, it is time to elect someone who will focus on representing the interests of his constituents rather than engage in petty politics.
