Sitzer Park Grand Re-Opening slideshow

Posted on 10. May, 2010 by Chris Dohman in City of Shoreview, Parks and Recreation

A grand Re-Opening and ribbon-cutting was held on Saturday at Shoreview’s Sitzer Park in which received a makeover last fall and this spring.

Sitzer Park is sporting new landscaping, a picnic pavilion, playground equipment, parking lot, and baseball field improvements including two new electronic scoreboards. Prior to the renovation a house sat in the middle of the north side of Sitzer Park but the owner Carol Fellner sold her property to  Shoreview to help complete the space. Carol Fellner was on hand for the Grand Re-Opening and was all smiles waving to the crowd.

Two new electronic scoreboards were also dedicated on Saturday which were bought with a donation from Shoreview Area Youth Baseball (SAYB). The scoreboards were dedicated in memoriam to Jared Barnes, who played in the SAYB program and died in a car accident and Randy Beebe, who was a long time volunteer for SAYB and died from cancer. SAYB received monetary gifts from the Barnes family and an unidentified donation totaling $10,000 which was given to Shoreveiw for the scoreboards. The north field scoreboard has the words “Donated by Shoreview Area Youth Baseball In memory of Jared Barnes” painted on it and the south field scoreboard has “Donated by Shoreview Area Youth Baseball In memory of Randy Beebe” painted on it. Family members of both Jared and Randy were on hand for the dedication.

Shoreview Mayor Sandy martin, Councilmember Ady Wickstrom, SAYB President Michael Anderson and a former SAYB president were on hand to speak and host the festivities which included a ribbon cutting, first pitch ceremony, and cake and coffee.

Sitzer park was also host to the Twins Youth Clinic in the south field on Saturday morning. Stations were set up where coaches give instruction on hitting, fielding and throwing. Many of the SAYB players were on hand for the clinic and were also on hand for the Grand Re-Opening and dedication. Shoreview is fortunate to have the Minnesota Twins sponsored clinic come to Shoreview the past number of years turning it into a spring tradition and great opportunity for kids.
