What do taxes bring?: letter to the editor by John Bristow
TweetSenate district 50 Republican candidate Gina Bauman can sound quite reasonable. As a voter in SD50 I have done some research on the candidates and found her actual positions to be quite disturbing. Let’s take a look at some statements from Gina’s own campaign website.
“Most of our current economic difficulties are the result of government losing sight of these simple concepts and over stepping its legitimate bounds and authority” Apparently she hasn’t noticed that the Wall Street/mortgage industry craziness which brought the US and world economies to the brink of collapse occurred FOLLOWING DE-regulation.
“No society has ever, or could ever, tax and regulate itself to prosperity.”
Sounds good and American – right? Not so fast. What do taxes bring? Oh, useless things like roads, schools, the Army – plus the state subsidies received by both Ms. Bauman and her husband as Home Health Care Aids to take care of her mother. Regulation is stifling and bad right? Hmm should we go back to rivers that start on fire or cars without seat belts? And, of course, the financial industry needs more freedom to come up with gems like mortgage backed securities. Let’s be clear here: Capitalism NEEDS regulation to function. Would the NFL be better if there were no referees on the field? They get some calls wrong, but the game couldn’t function without them.
“Government does not and can not (sic) create wealth”. Seeing a pattern here? Again – roads, bridges, schools, police etc. How much wealth could the private sector create without these?
There are many more examples. If Gina and her cohorts gain power our current problems will seem like the Garden of Eden.
